The James Library & Center for the Arts Presents All-Star Night of Jazz

All-Star Night of Jazz features world-class musicians Laszlo Gardony on piano, Yoron Israel on drums, John Lockwood on bass, and Stan Strickland on saxophone, plus a surprise guest. Virtuosic talent has drawn these five musicians of the highest critical acclaim to perform together their own original compositions and arrangements for a jazz concert beyond imagination.
Hungarian-born Laszlo Gardony has delivered soulful improvisations and compositions to great critical acclaim in 26 countries. Winner of the Great American Jazz Piano Competition, Gardony has been called “a pianist worthy of praise within the highest pantheon of performers” by Jazz Review and “a great pianist” by Dave Brubeck. He has released 11 albums, including his sextet's new live album, “Life In Real Time” featuring several musicians performing at this concert. He has been featured with the Boston Pops, the Utah Symphony and The Smithsonian Institute’s “Beyond Category” Traveling Duke Ellington Exhibit. A Bostonian for over two decades, he currently serves as a Professor of Piano at Berklee College of Music.
Percussion master Yoron Israel’s brilliant musicality, intensity and versatility are appreciated worldwide, with international recognition for performance. He has released seven notable albums as a bandleader, the most recent being “This Moment”. Additionally he is featured on over 200 major recordings as an accompanists with such artists as Ahmad Jamal, Abbey Lincoln, Art Farmer, Joe Lovano, Tom Harrell, Joshua Redman and Roy Hargrove among numerous others. A highly regarded educator, Israel is a clinician, author and is the esteemed Assistant Chair and Professor of Percussion at Berklee College of Music.
Acoustic and electric bassist John Lockwood has toured stateside and in Europe extensively. He has performed with the Buffalo Philharmonic, the Boston Pops, MIT Symphony, Pat Metheny, Dizzy Gillespie, Woody Shaw, Toots Thielemans, Stan Getz, and more. Lockwood also serves as Associate Professor of Bass at Berklee College of Music and New England Conservatory.
American singer, saxophonist, flutist and actor Stan Strickland has performed internationally; featured on recordings by jazz greats including Bob Moses, Marty Erlich and Yusef Lateef; opened for Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins and more. Strickland serves as an adjunct professor at Lesley College, and teaches at Berklee College of Music, Tufts University, and Longy School of Music.
